Your tire tread wears down naturally due to surface friction. Like all other vehicle components, your tires need regular checkups to ensure they’re safe and in good condition. Tire problems are a leading cause of accidents and can damage other components like the brakes, shocks, and struts. As your Acura dealership, we want to tell you a few signs you need to visit us for tire maintenance.
Signs You Need To Visit Your Acura Dealership for Tire Maintenance
Tire Vibrations
If you feel vibrations from your tires, something is wrong. Vibrations can be caused by poor tire balance or incorrect wheel alignment. Your tires are correctly balanced when new, but tread wear, lost balance weights, and other issues can unbalance them. We can fix this issue by putting each tire on our computerized balancing machine. This machine will identify incorrect balance, and we’ll add extra weights to the tire to correct the problem.
Wheel alignment is the angle of your wheels perpendicular to the ground and from a straight line looking forward. Your Acura’s tires are set at specific angles to provide the best handling, balance, and weight distribution. As time passes, wheels lose their alignment, increasing tire wear. We fix this by attaching your wheels to our alignment machine. This machine carefully restores each wheel to its correct alignment.
Incorrect Tire Pressure
If your tires are correctly pressurized, they will suffer less friction damage. Tire pressure changes naturally by 1 to 2 PSI per 10 degrees of external temperature, with high outside temperatures increasing and low temperatures decreasing the pressure. If your tire pressure is low, you’ll see increased wear on the tread’s outside edges as the tire sags toward the ground.
If tire pressure is too high, you’ll notice increased wear on the tread center, as this area carries all your Acura’s weight. Incorrect pressure reduces vehicle handling and increases stopping distance. In addition, underinflated tires are more likely to develop leaks, while overinflated tires are prone to blowouts. Our technicians will correct your tire pressure and check for signs of damage.
Excessive Cracking
Modern tires are manufactured from high-quality rubber to provide strength and flexibility. Unfortunately, rubber will age, and exposure to sunlight, water, and mud eventually causes them to lose flexibility. Inflexible rubber will crack, and cracks will slowly widen and deepen as the rubber heats up when driving and cools when your Acura is stationary.
Cracks that reach deep into a tire can cause leaks, leading to further wear and tear. We’ll examine your tires and advise if replacement is necessary. Should you need new tires, we can install and balance them in minutes so you can continue to drive safely.
