Signs You Need a Transmission Service at Your Acura Dealer

Transmission Leak

A puddle of red fluid underneath your vehicle is a sign you have a transmission leak. Transmission fluid is essential for the transmission, providing the hydraulic power that allows the gears to shift smoothly and easily. This fluid also reduces transmission wear and tear by coating the components in a friction-resistant film. In addition, the fluid helps cool the hot components so they can work more efficiently.

The transmission casing is strong and damage-resistant, but worn seals can easily cause a leak. As the transmission loses fluid, you’ll hear strange noises when you shift and gear shifting will become more difficult. We advise against driving if you have a leaking transmission, as this can result in further damage. We’ll find the leak source and repair it, then replace the fluid.

Damaged Needle Roller Bearings

There are many different types of bearings in your car, but they all have the same basic purpose. Bearings allow components to move more easily, reducing wear and tear in the process. If you have an automatic transmission and hear grinding noises from the transmission when it shifts, you could have damaged needle roller bearings.

Needle roller bearings are small, light roller bearings placed between the gears to allow them to move easily and protect them against friction damage in the process. These bearings can wear out over time, and this causes the gears to grind against each other as they move. Continual grinding will wear down the gears much faster. Our technicians will investigate and replace any worn bearings to fix this issue.

Burning Rubber Smell

Burning rubber has a foul smell but becomes disturbing if you smell its stench from your transmission. This smell means the transmission fluid has overheated and could be burning. Like all other fluids, transmission fluid needs to be regularly replaced as it loses its specialized properties as it ages. Older transmission fluid also loses its heat-resistant properties.

A car transmission is a very hot environment due to the constant movement of countless components. Without its heat resistance, old transmission fluid can easily burn. This drastically reduces its ability to provide the hydraulic power to shift gears. We can fix this problem by draining the old fluid, flushing the transmission to remove any residue, and replacing the fluid.
